The Masks Taken Off

The mask is worn

to hide our faces.

The mask is taken off

at least we think it is

when we don’t feel the need to hide.

But we hid behind our masks so long

who is to say that the mask and you

are not one in the same.

The mask is taken off

when that feeling is being brought to me.

That feeling of being comfortable.

that feeling of love

and trust.

We think it’s the mask we are taken away at least.

But possibly, the mask has been welded to our face.

Formed perfectly

Creased the perfect amount

and colored the exact shade.

The mask we’ve worn since the day we were born

from the orders that were given

from the words that were said

from the memories created.

All those little things became us eventually.

The mask was molded

and formed

and perfected as we grew.

The mask I’ve taken off

is the same shade as my skin

and the same size of my eyes.

The mask I’ve taken off

made me feel naked

but I felt safe.
